Niccolò Paganini’s “Cannone” and the Conservation of the Violin

International study day on the "Cannone" and the conservation of the historical violin

As part of the cultural program accompanying the 58th edition of the Competition (Genoa, October 14–26, 2025), the Premio Paganini, in collaboration with IGIIC – the Italian Group of the International Institute for Conservation, is promoting an International Study Day dedicated to a true icon of Genoa’s cultural heritage: Niccolò Paganini’s “Cannone”.

The event will take place on October 24, 2025, at Palazzo Tursi, where the famous instrument, built by Guarneri del Gesù in 1743, is preserved. Paganini himself bequeathed the violin to his hometown in his will, requesting that it be "perpetually preserved".

This event will serve as a high-level opportunity for scientific exchange and in-depth discussion, involving prominent international experts and scholars in the fields of conservation, diagnostics, and restoration of historical string instruments. Through a rich program of thematic presentations, the Study Day aims to:

- promote dialogue among cultural institutions, curators, restorers, scholars, and students;
- explore the most advanced conservation methodologies;
- provide an update on the state of the art in the care and protection of historical instruments, both in public and private contexts.

Premio Paganini and IGIIC will publish the proceedings, which will include the scientific contributions presented.

Further details about the program will be released in the coming weeks.

Participation in the event is free of charge, subject to registration at the following link:
