Arie Van Lysebeth

He began studying music, the violin in particular, at the age of four under the guide of his father who was a choirmaster. He completed his advanced studies, theoretical and instrumental, at the "Conservatoire Royal de Bruxelles," deepening his musical understanding with the study of the piano and bassoon. After he won an international bassoon competition in Prague, he became the "bassoon soloist" for the Symphony Orchestra on Belgian radio and television. At the same time he performed his concert repertoire many times with various orchestras.

He taught chamber music at the Flemish "Conservatoire Royal" of Bruxelles for 24 years. In addition he continued his musical education in the United States (at Minnesota University), the "Conservatoire National supérieur de musique" of Paris and the Netherlands.

At the same time he was director of the "Académie de Zaventem," where he was particularly committed to developing and maintaining the highest level of instruction.

In the mean time he obtained a degree in orchestra conducting, as always from the "Conservatoire Royal" of Bruxelles. He enrolled in orchestra conducting courses at "Mozarteum" of Salsburg, with Bruno Maderna, while with Pierre Boulez he specialized in conducting contemporary music.

At the conclusion of his studies of orchestra conducting, he founded the Flemish Chamber Orchestra of Bruxelles in 1970, which he conducted in Belgium and beyond until 1993. For three years he conducted the exhibitions of the "Ballet Royal de Flandre" in Belgium and around the world.

He has conducted the most talented Belgian orchestras and numerous symphony orchestras in the United States, Argentina, Taiwan, Great Britain, Italy, and Yugoslavia.

He has conducted famous musicians such as Igor Oistrakh, Philippe Hirschhorn, Murray Perahia, José Van Dam, Jean-Claude Vanden Eyden.

From 1994 to 2003 he was the director of the Flemish "Conservatoire Royal" of Bruxelles. In 1995 he was named President of the Jury for the "Queen Elizabeth" International Music Competition of Belgium, a position that he still holds.

Moreover, in September 2004 he will become the musical director of a recently established and prestigious institution, created to expose young and gifted musicians and provide them with the guidance and the means to pursue a professional career in music.

As President of the Jury Lysebeth has worked with famous personalities in the music world such as: Yehudi Menuhin, José Van Dam, Paul Badura Skoda, Ida Haendel, Joan Sutherland, Sena Jurinac, Luigi Alva, Augustin Dumay, Igor Oistrakh, Schlomo Mintz and many others.

Since 1997 he has conducted the Symphony Orchestra of the Flemish "Conservatoire Royal" of Bruxelles, with which he recently performed in Madrid with the winner of the "Queen Elizabeth" competition, in a concert for Spanish television. This performance was deemed a noteworthy success.

Every year he organizes a series of symphony concerts in Belgium, frequently collaborating with the prize-winners of the "Queen Elizabeth" International Music Competition.
