A versatile conductor and a profound connoisseur of musical styles, from German Romanticism to the Second Viennese School and the Baroque. He has served as Principal Guest Conductor of the Slovenian Philharmonic and colla borates regularly with leading orchestras, including the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, the Gürzenich Orchestra, the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, the Tokyo Metropolitan Orchestra, the Orchestre de Chambre de Paris, the SWR Symphonieorchester, among many others.
His interest in historically informed performance practice led him to found the Originalklang Project of the Gustav Mahler Academy, with which, in 2024, he embarked on a tour that was met with extraordinary acclaim from both audiences and critics, performing in Vienna, Paris, Amsterdam, and Cologne.
A pupil and collaborator of Claudio Abbado, he worked with him first as a cellist of the Mahler Chamber Orchestra and later as assistant conductor of the Orchestra Mozart. Equally decisive was his encounter with Sir John Eliot Gardiner, with whom he also served as assistant.
His discography includes, among others, Haydn’s The Creation, Bruckner’s Symphony No. 1, Mahler’s Das Lied von der Erde, and an album of arias by Mozart and Gluck.
In 2024 he released Mahler’s Symphony No. 9 on period instruments with Alpha Classics, a project that will continue with Symphony No. 5 in 2026.
